Shopify just updated its Partner Program and API license agreements effective February 27, 2026.
What Just Happened
Shopify just completely re-defined what a partner is, and it includes our agentic digital colleagues, not just humans.
Shopify has now banned the use of customer and order data to improve your AI models.
Shopify has really tightened its restrictions on payment providers with regards to billing transparency, pricing notices, and wind-down.
What It Means
There are three key takeaways for me from this update:
Shopify's center of gravity moving to Sidekick and agentic apps. The updates confirm to me that the "AI-based App Store" is where the puck has moved to in the Shopify ecosystem. It's not just are you in the App Store, it's are you developing agents that use Shopify's capabilities, and giving data and access from your app to Shopify's own Sidekick agent. In other words, Shopify wants to become the definitive agentic app ecosystem.
Shopify’s legal team is officially in overdrive. Scared of being left behind, the legal team is leaving nothing to chance. Whether the data is from a real user, or a virtual one, Shopify owns the "rails" and the "data" associated with its experience. And, history tells us that Shopify actively defends its turf (Hello, Buy With Prime and Mailchimp).
Shopify keeps the intelligence. You can use the data to service the merchant or the customer, but you can't keep the intelligence for yourself. If I'm a developer, this is somewhat of a frightening change. Are you sure your model isn't improving based on Shopify's data? How aggressive will Shopify be in its enforcement of this?
Payment providers serve at Shopify's pleasure. You might think that if you provide functionality in Shopify's payment ecosystem, you can set your own rules. At this point, nothing could be further from the truth.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Shopify's updates move it away from the "move fast and break things" culture and towards a culture of protecting its AI future, and safeguarding customers and merchants against fraud and unannounced updates. When you have a partner ecosystem as large as Shopify, and an increasingly "Wild West" agentic future, bad things can and will happen. Kudos to Shopify for trying to get ahead of issues, but there could be some unintended developer consequences in its wake. Especially with regards to data you thought was yours, but is actually Shopify's. (or is it the merchant’s data? Ah, I forget.)

They weren’t the cheapest option on the block, but they had the "cool factor": they were reliable, and they worked with the brands everyone wanted to be.
But here’s a bit of history most people miss: Quiet Logistics was actually the first third-party logistics provider to use Kiva Robots. You know Kiva—the orange bots that made Amazon... well, Amazon.
In 2012, the floor fell out. Amazon bought Kiva and, in a ruthless strategic move, kicked everyone else off the platform. For most founders, losing your entire tech backbone would be a death sentence.
The Bruce Welty Factor
Enter Bruce Welty. I actually met Bruce back in 2015, early in the Quiet journey. Let me tell you: impressive doesn't cover it. He’s the kind of entrepreneur who doesn't just pivot; he builds a new road.
Instead of licking his wounds after the Kiva lockout, Bruce decided if he couldn't buy the best robots, he’d build them. That led to the birth of Locus Robotics.
Now, here is the "chef’s kiss" of business moves: When American Eagle came knocking to buy Quiet Logistics to shore up their supply chain, they got the warehouses, the expertise, and the "Quiet" brand. But they didn't get Locus. Bruce kept the robotics company separate.
Why It Matters
Today, Locus Robotics is an independent powerhouse with massive valuation, while American Eagle owns the logistics engine that keeps their jeans moving.
Why was this "always going to happen"? Because in modern retail, you aren't just competing on the design of a shirt; you’re competing on how fast that shirt hits a doorstep. American Eagle didn't just buy a shipping company; they bought a decade of Bruce Welty’s foresight. They bought the reliability of a company that survived Amazon’s "Great Robot Eviction" of 2012 and emerged stronger.
Quiet Logistics proved that being the low-cost leader isn't the only way to win. If you have the tech, the reliability, and the right brands, the giants will eventually come to you. Bruce Welty just made sure that when they did, he still held the keys to the future.
